I'm not sure but I don't think anyone races them around here. I think you need to get yourself a short course truck. For an all around good time. You can race it or smash the crap out of it and parts are everywhere and cheap. I have a brushless Slash with radio for $250 I will even throw in a LiPo at that price.

You still need a radio, speed control, motor and batteries. That will push you over your budget. You need to convince your Mom that a RTR SC truck is the way to go. Then all you need down the road is a better charger and more batteries.

Seriously, take him up on the offer.
The Slash is an awesome short course truck.
It's fast, it jumps, it's tough, and lots of people race them.
There are lots of Traxxas parts at the LHS and aftermarket support too.
