Diff 101: it allows your wheels to turn different ammounts. If you were to drive in a circle your inside wheels would turn less than your outside wheels. If you did not have a diff your car would not turn very well they would bind because one wheel is turning more than the other.. Most drag cars have a locked diff or a "spool" this makes it so both wheels turn all the time, it makes the car hook up better in a stright line when you launch. Having a one way diff in your car makes it so under load the diff works normal but when you are off the gas the wheels can turn freely with no drag in them from the diff thus making them grip better. A one way would usually go on the front of an awd car.

In order to tell the difference hold the driveshaft or belt and turn one of the front wheels forward, if the other front wheel turns forward you have a one way, if it turns the opposite way you have a regular diff.
